Madrid photoshoot guide: old town or Retiro?

The best starting point for a Madrid photoshoot is the feeling you want in the pictures. Choose the city’s warm stone and open squares, or a quieter green setting. A focused route leaves more time for relaxed photographs together.

Choose one setting to begin

For recognisable city scenery, start with the Plaza Mayor area. Its arcades give a visual frame for wide portraits and closer moments. The official Madrid tourism page also lists events in the square, so the route needs a check for temporary activity before your date.

Choose Retiro for a softer background of trees, paths and gardens. Plan a specific entrance and one part of the park: “meet at Retiro” is too vague for a comfortable start. Treat the park and the old town as alternative routes for a short session.

Choose the light, then the start time

An early start is worth considering if a calmer city setting matters to you. Later light can suit warmer portraits, but tall buildings cast different shadows from an open park. Share your actual travel date so we can choose a start time around the season and the agreed backdrop.

For a midday session, look for an even patch of shade rather than facing strong sun. A cloudy day can work beautifully for portraits; colour and connection matter more than a perfectly clear sky. Weather and crowds can change the final sequence.

Match the route to your package

For a 30-minute session, keep to one small area and one outfit. With an hour, leave room for a walk between nearby backgrounds, a few wider frames and some close portraits. Choose a longer package if outfit changes, film or several stops are important. Travel time between settings still uses time in your plan.

Our published packages include unlimited photographs and editing. The package duration remains fixed; the booking form asks for a start time. You can compare the current options before requesting your date, and your final route is confirmed personally.

Make the walk comfortable

Wear something you can sit, stand and move in. Comfortable shoes for walking and a light layer are useful; a small bag keeps hands free between photographs. Coordinated colours can work well for couples without needing identical outfits.

Tell us about children, mobility needs or places you would prefer to avoid. For a surprise proposal, discuss the plan privately before booking so directions, timing and the meeting point do not reveal the surprise.

Check access before fixing the route

Retiro can close partly or entirely during severe weather alerts, as Madrid’s official visitor information explains. Agree an alternative meeting area before the session. Building interiors, entry tickets and a private space are separate arrangements; a photography booking does not reserve a public square.

For wedding coverage, send the venue and ceremony timetable instead of choosing a travel session by duration alone. Coverage, portrait time and access should be planned around the day.
